Course Overview

Here’s What You’ll Get When You Sign Up

The GOAL

The goal of this class is to re-create the example piano bar scene in the video above. You can also choose to create another scene.

But the goal is to learn filmmaking with Unreal Engine while creating this scene.

You get the footage & characters you need. They are included in this course. But you can also shoot your own green screen footage.

01 Learn all the basics in Unreal Engine

We start very easy with downloading and installing Unreal Engine and take the very first steps in the program like navigating and getting familiar with the user interface.

But right from the start we focus on building something.

Theory is great. But it’s more fun to create something right from the beginning.

You will learn faster and better this way.

02 Create your virtual film set

The biggest strength of Unreal Engine is the easy access to a wealth of stunning film sets.

In this part of the class, you will learn how to get and prepare your virtual film set. There are a lot of templates out there that you can customize as you want.

In this class we’ll get a bar set and a grand piano and will make some changes to it (move furnitures around, change the color of some pieces). This is what we’ll cover in this second part of this course.

03 Create cinematic lighting in Unreal Engine

Lights are key to a professional looking video or movie.

The possibilities with light in Unreal Engine are limitless. You can literally create a multi million dollar light show for free.

In this class we focus on a nice lighting on our charaters that we can re create in front of our green screen.

This step really help us to match our green screen footage to our Unreal Engine world.

04 Learn how to create and operate virtual cameras

In this class your green screen camera will be on a tripod.

It’s not moving.

(BTW if you don‘t want to record your own footage, I’ll have some green screen footage prepared for you.)

You will learn how to make use of virtual cameras in Unreal Engine.

This will transform your real life camera into a huge film studio.

Because it allows you to make huge camera movements.

Change aperture, zoom setting, focus,…

And create incredible looking cinematic camera shots.

05 Get video into Unreal Engine

Unfortunately it’s not so easy to get your video footage imported into Unreal Engine.

This is one of the challenges when you work in 3D space.

But in this part of the class I will make it easy for you. Show which options you have and guide you through them step-by-step.

06 Get your life camera feed into Unreal Engine.

Ok, this one is really exciting!

As soon as you know how to get your recorded camera footage into Unreal, there is not much more to do to get your life camera feed into the program.

The big advantage is this makes it very easy to match the lighting in front of the green screen to the lighting in your Unreal scene.

07 Import virtual characters as placeholders

Importing virtual characters into Unreal Engine helps us set the lighting.

We can also prepare our camera shots before we record our green screen footage.

A secret weapon to incredible results.

08 Render your scene for high quality

You can have a great filmset, set amazing lighting and create great shots, if you mess up the render you won’t be happy with your result.

In this part of the class I guide you through the render process. I share the best settings to a high quality render and what else you need to consider.

09 Color correct in your editing software

The beauty with Unreal Engine is that you can do everything in app. You cold even do the editing and color correction within Unreal Engine.

But I personally choose to do that in my editing software. I’m using Davinci Resolve for that.

But you can use any software you want (Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro,…)

In this part of the course we cover the color correction process. This make our render look even more cinematic.

10 Add music, sounds & special effects

In this last part of the class we add the final touch: music, sounds & special effects. We keep it simple here, but I share some great sources that you can use for your scenes.

11 Get green screen footage + animated characters

This class comes with footage, virtual characters and animations so that you can start immediately also if you don’t want to record your own footage.

The characters can be used as placeholders or even background characters for any of your future projects.

Works with UE4 & UE5

Everything we do here works in both Unreal Engine 4 and Unreal Engine 5.

And you can definitely do this in UE5.

I know that many people would love to work with UE5. But for our purpose here, we get better results using UE4 and turn on ray tracing right before the render.

This is why I recommend to work with version 4.26 for this project at this moment. It’s the most reliable version for this workflow.

More than 30 detailed lessons

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the system requirements?

You should have a good gaming PC. The more power the better. The bar scene of this tutorial is not too power hungry :)
While you should be able to follow my course on a Mac, please not that I haven't tested the bar scene on a Mac yet.

Is the bar set & the grand piano in the course included?

No, you can purchase the bar for $39 and the Grand Piano for another $39 on the Unreal Engine Marketplace. The course shows you exactly how to do that.

If you don't want to spend the money on this, you can also choose one of many many FREE asset packs on the Unreal Engine Marketplace.

How long will it take to finish the class?

The course has a runtime of a little more than 3 hours. But it's jampacked full of content and you should calculate 3-4 x the time since you do all the steps for the first time and also have to wait for your computer to calculate/render/build some data. So in 12 hours of focused work you should have a great result and learnt a lot!

What if I have specific questions about equipment or other things?

The best place to ask this questions is in the comment section below the video that your questions belongs to. I will answer there and everyone can learn from the comment section as well.

How long does it take to record a scene with this workflow?

As I mentioned before your very first scene you will create with this class will take around 12 hours.

But the more you practice, the faster you get.

I have my green screen and equipment always ready and setup. This way I can record very fast.

It depends on the scene and shot. But it can be as little as 5 min to shoot a scene or 2 hours. Of course you can always do more and spend days on one scene.

How long do I have access to the lessons?

This class is a one-time payment with lifetime access class.
