Why you should care:

Traditional Filmmaking vs. Filmmaking in 2021

Let’s say you want to create a Taylor Swift Music Video like the one for her song “Look what you made me do” or “Blank Space” or an Ariana Grande music video or any other High-Budget music video.

Cost per music video like this is around $250,000. Why is that so high for a 3 min “short film”? Because she is shooting in multiple locations, needs to get the whole crew there for the shoot, let teams build huge film settings and having teams working a long time on VFX work (tracking, clone stamping, rotoscoping,…) in Post Production.

What, if I tell you that you can shoot an unlimited amount of videos with a ONE-TIME budget of $2,500 instead of $250,000 for only one video using Virtual Production with Unreal Engine?

That would mean:

Taylor Swift’s label would have to pay $2,500,000 for 10 music videos.

And you would only pay $2,500 for 10 music videos.

In addition you would be done in a fraction of time and with a CO2 output close to ZERO compared to all the travel emission for the whole Taylor Swift crew.

And I share even ways in my class that are completely free. You only need a good PC.

No need for us to rent the Inglewood Forum or another indoor arena for $40,000 like Michael Jackson did for a video shoot.

Our setting was available FOR FREE on the Unreal Engine Marketplace.

Don’t loose track on changes in the industry. Virtual Production is the future is here!

The thing is…

While it may sound stupid from Taylor Swift’s production company to spend so much money on a music video when it’s not needed, is not true.

But when they shot these music videos the technique was simply just not there where it is today.

And the industry is not sleeping.

When the pandemic hit the industry in 2020 (and luckily graphics cards became powerful enough) the VFX company that does a lot of work for Taylor Swift’s music video and also Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, etc… invested in the same Virtual Production System as I did the same year.

They saw that the world is transitioning quickly away from real settings to virtual settings.

They see that the advantages are so extreme that they have to adapt.

Not only the extreme cost savings, much shorter production timelines but also less people needed, remote work possible and a VFX workflow never seen before in realtime!!

Compete with High-Budget Productions

What’s new this time is that we Indie Filmmakers & Youtube Video Producer get the same tools on our hands that were previously exclusive available for big production companies.

As I said before I got exactly the same Virtual Production System as the VFX company that makes Taylor Swift’s High-Budget music-videos.

I’m talking about the Vanishing Point System for Virtual Production for camera tracking and All-in-One software solution with integration for Unreal Engine. Of course I’m using Unreal Engine as well. It’s free for all of us (of course that’s a big deal as well).

And there are many other great solutions out there today.

Some people already know the HTC Vive Trackers, but there are even cheaper and better solutions out there.

What Budget do I need?

You can start with a good Gaming PC, your camera with HDMI Out, an $18 USB to HDMI converter and a $170 Tracking Sensor (optional).

And you can get really great results with this minimalistic setup!!

How does that work?

Instead of building film sets or traveling to the shooting location in France and then to the next location in the Sahara Desert you build your set virtual using the game engine Unreal Engine. (You can also simply use one of near-unlimited pre-made settings you can get in the Unreal Marketplace for a couple of bugs).

Then you have 2 options:

1. You use a big LED wall as your PC monitor that projects your created setting as a background for your actors

Virtual Production Unreal Engine LED Wall

or

2. You use a green screen as background, but have a small monitor on your camera rig that can also record what you see there and then do the green-screen key in real-time and see the composite of your actor + your setting created in Unreal Engine.

Both ways have advantages and disadvantages that I will explain further below on this site.

But what’s the difference to green screen?

Well… it’s like green screen on steroids.

Green Screen is used by Hollywood and filmmakers all around the world for VFX works very successfully. But they are about to transition to Virtual Production. Why?

Traditional Green Screen

Virtual Production

You have to guess and be lucky that the footage you are shooting, will really match your background clips.

You can see and record your final composition while you are shooting in real-time.

You have to do the camera tracking in post production and match it to your background. Very time consuming.

You do the camera tracking and matching to the virtual world in real-time while shooting.

You have to find material that works as your background (incl. the right camera angle).

Thanks to the 3D world in Unreal Engine, you just pick your favorite place how you would shoot in the real world.

Interacting with the background picture is close to impossible.

Since you can see your final picture while shooting, you can match your real life objects/characters to the virtual world and it looks like one.

There are many more advantages over the traditional green screen work. Thanks to the workflow in real-time!

Possibilities that you have never seen before

As you can imagine building a scene virtual within the computer that looks incredible realistic is so much more cost and time efficient than building real sets and traveling to shooting locations.

Suddenly you literally have access to multi-million dollar sets and can use multiple of them on the same day.

But there is even one more bonus and that’s a big one!

In addition to have this incredible set for your real life actors you can also use virtual scenes only in your final video.

Let me explain what that means and why it‘s a big deal.

Mixed-Reality vs. Virtual Only

There are 2 game changing ways for unlimited possibilities:

1. You can use a multi-million dollar set as your setting for your real-life actors.

2. You can create scenes that are 100% virtual.

(Scenes where you don’t need real-life actors or scenes with virtual characters)

And the best thing is you can mix it all together.

Let’s say you are shooting in a 50s American diners. In one scene you have a man and a woman having a conversation at the bar. Or as in the following example an artist performing in this 50s Diners. This is the mixed-reality scene. The diners is virtual and the actors are real.

Mixed-Reality Scene. The artist is real, the background is unreal. Please note that this is a real-time shot. It looks exactly like this while shooting. This way you can adjust the lights on the actor very easily that it matches the virtual setting in the background.

Then there should be a close-up shot of the grill, which zooms out to the outside of the Diners and transitions into a horizontal camera move. This one can be virtual only.

That way you can create camera shots never been possible before. (Especially not on a Indie budget)

Save time on set and make changes to your scene after the shoot took place.

SPONSOR OPPORTUNITY: Let’s say a whiskey brand became last minute sponsor of the video, you can simply put the new bottle in the scene. Brands often have a virtual 3D version of their products ready to use or you can even get some on 3D marketplaces like Sketchfab or CGTrader that you can use in your project.

Why Unreal Engine?

What’s the difference to other 3D applications?

Epic Games, the creator of Unreal Engine, has a strong focus on providing new possibilities for filmmakers and supporting the film industry. More and more production companies are transitioning to Virtual Production using Unreal Engine.

But why Unreal Engine?

Why not another 3D software like Cinema4D, Blender or Maya?

Because Unreal Engine is a real-time render software.

When I heard about Unreal Engine first I was wondering what people meant when they said “Wow! The future is real-time”.

The thing is very easy. It’s just not possible yet in other 3D applications like Blender or Maya to move through the 3D world in a very high quality without rendering each frame, which takes a long time for each frame.

In Unreal Engine everything just looks great without extra render time, when you output your scene through HDMI or SDI Output of your computer (capture card needed. But we talk about it later).

Lighting, reflections, objects,…. The quality is just amazing.

The Unreal Engine real-time render quality

(It’s hard to tell if it‘s real an unreal):

Produce Wherever You Want

The equipment I chose is 100% mobile. Well, I do work with a Desktop PC, but it’s still easy to bring it into another studio to shoot.

But what makes it special is that both, my Vanishing Point Tracking System and also my Mocap Suit work without fixed studio installations and I can simply put it and go and record in another room or another place. Even outside! This can be very interesting for Mixed-Reality Scenes where you want to shoot a virtual object/character in a real world.

And for Body Motion Capture it’s great because you can record huge motion for example a very long running scene, when you character is running through a desert.

Most of the time I produce in my little 9”x11” room at home. It’s very tiny and not ideal for virtual production. More place for lighting and camera work would be great.

But what I want to show with this is how minimalistic virtual production really is. With how little recourses and effort you can create high-budget looking movies, short films and music videos.

And to be honest… I live in the heart of Hollywood and renting a 1000–4000 sf studio space with high ceilings costs around $20,000-40,000/month.

And there’s another reason…

I just like it :)

I mean getting from your bedroom in the kitchen to grab a coffee and then immediately start the first shift in the studio without showering…

I mean I don’t want to share this picture with you but this lifestyle is just great!

My 9x11 Virtual Production Studio at Home

My 9x11 Virtual Production Studio at Home where I shot music videos that got millions of views. (Imagine what you can shoot in a bigger studio and with a team of 2-5 people)

We shot our first music video in my "Work-from-home-quarantine-studio" in the kitchen.

Don’t miss the opportunity to gain a competitive advantage. You Should Start Now!

Build Your Own Indie Virtual Production Studio

Since there a not a lot of learning recourses out there to build a Virtual Production Studio on an indie level, we see a lot of “tests” and “unfinished projects” but not much real virtual production work.

The hardware is powerful enough now.

The software is ready.

But a lot of small studios are still trying to figure things out.

They are searching for a setup and workflow that just works.

And the good news is: It’s here!

I finished the work that Epic Games started with their “Virtual Production Primer”.

I’m using the same pipeline, the same equipment:

  • Powerful Desktop PC
  • Unreal Engine
  • Vanishing Point System for Virtual Production (incl. Decklink Capture Card)
  • Blackmagic Design Camera
  • Lastolite Green Screen
  • Reallusion Character Creator & iClone
  • Rokoko Mocap Suit

This is all hard- & software for an Indie budget (around $10,000 - $25,000).

But, as I mentioned before, I had more question after watching the Virtual Production Primer than before.

It took me a long time, but I found answers.

And I decided to share all these answers with you!

The Thing is: It does NOT just work “out of the box”.

The equipment the companies deliver are not just plug and play.

Yes, they sell the dream.

They say “it’s easy, fun and playful.”

But it’s not.

For example, when I got my Rokoko Mocap suit and started to make my first recordings. The result where horrible. And it took me a long time back and forth with Rokoko support to learn that it‘s not that easy and that some things shouldn’t be possible for me.

But I didn’t give up!

And today I’m proud to be one of the few people who get really great & professional results with their Rokoko Mocap suit.

The challenges of building a virtual production studio

I started with the Unreal Engine “Virtual Production Primer” and was totally excited what a bright future would be ahead of us. I know that Virtual Reality is becoming more and more popular and will affect more and more markets. I knew that now is the time to switch and start with Virtual Production. Not only because of the pandemic, but for the future of filmmaking.

Learning all the stuff took me nearly a year since there was (and still is) not much information about important details out there. There are still too many many small problems that are not addressed. For example the official “Virtual Production Primer” from Epic Games was great, motivational and I learned a lot. But I had more questions after watching than before.

A lot of information is hidden in hundreds of 1-3 hour long webinars.

And some information (for example when it comes to great hair on virtual characters or doing the composite in post instead of real-time) is just not out there.

Finally after more than a year, we not only produced our first music videos (both Virtual & Mixed Reality), but after producing everything at home, we finally are about to build our Indie Virtual Production Studio in the heard of Hollywood. It will be the first studio in the Hollywood media district since other VP Studios are outside of Los Angeles.

And with all that information gathered it would be a pity to keep it all by myself. Today I’m proud to announce that I will share everything I learned and everything you need to build and technical operate your own or your companies professional Virtual Production Studio on an Indie Budget!

And it becomes even better.

Class Overview

Here’s What You’ll Get When You Sign Up

1

Class 1: Virtual Production Basics
What you need to get started

In this module we discuss exactly which equipment and studio space you need and what results you can expect with different setups. Of course we talk about costs & budget.

Also we will discuss the possibilities and how you can built your studio modular and as efficient as possible. The goal is to create. But there are different ways to do that.

Do you want fast (same day) results?

Do you want to work with more advanced special effects like adding motion to virtual elements or even charcaters to your real world scene?

Do you have limited recording space for lights & camera movements available?

How much time do you have available? Do you plan to work full time or part time in your virtual production studio?

We’ll figure out which way is the best for you.

Please consider the following costs:

If you have a green screen, a good gaming PC and at least a DSLR or mirrorless camera with HDMI Out, you can start with an additional HDMI to USB converter for just $18.

If you want to start with camera tracking you need an additional $170 for a very high quality tracking sensor (Better than Vive Trackers)

If you have around $2500, that’s really amazing, because you can get a very professional solution with genlock.

If you have a budget of $70,000 or more, great! You will get an amazing Indie Studio Setup!! (with multiple great cameras, full body motion capture suit, huge green screen, great lighting and more than you will need)

But also with a small budget the possibilities are endless and you will have a lot of fun and create great results.

For the studio space: You can see that I’m working a lot in a tiny 9x11 sf room in my apartment. And it’s crazy which results I get there!! But, no questions, a bigger room and high ceilings would be a better option. Especially to avoid issues with your green screen.

It’s hard to figure out a way on your own, but we’ll make it straight forward as part of this module. After you finished this module you’ll have a very clear idea of what you need and where to start so that you can take action immediately.

You can buy this module for $200 here, but for best value get the bundle further down on this site.

2

Class 2: Create Multi-Million Dollar Sets

The biggest strength of Virtual Production with Unreal Engine is that you get easy access to a wealth of stunning film sets.

You can literally film a scene in a private jet another one in the Hollywood Hills, one in space and on the moon, another one in a hidden cyberpunk bunker, then in a desert at a beautiful Oasis, then in a fantasy world that contains huge products of your sponsor,…

… within 1(!) day!!!

Everything in a 3D world.

And this is the module where we go through all of that!

It’s a very comprehensive module, but we keep it as easy and as efficient as possible. the goal is to get great results fast.

We talk about the Unreal Engine Basics

Scene Creation in Unreal Engine “From ZERO to a great film setting”

But did you know that there is a wealth of Pre-Made Scenes available for commercial use in the Unreal Engine Marketplace. You can get some of them for free, a lot for around $20-$50 and some for around $100-$300.

And the best thing is you combine them as you like!!

This is literally built your dream world like a puzzle.

And you should know a popular way is definitely get a pre-made scene and make some adjustments to it and then start shooting.

But we talk about important details to consider so that your shoot will be successful.

You can buy this module for $200 here, but for best value get the bundle further down on this site.

3

Class 3: Setting Up Your Camera & Tracking System

Your Camera and your camera tracking system is the heart of your virtual production studio.

The real advantage (and it’s a big one!) is the real-time workflow.

You can literally navigate and film in your virtual world as if it was real.

I’m using the Vanishing Point System for Virtual Production.

But I’m also paying close attention to changes in the market and checking our alternative solutions.

This system is still the best option for Indie Virtual Production.

It’s affordable.

It’s an all-in-One Solution. There are multiple things you need and for other systems you need to pick them all together and make them work together, which can be challenging. With the Vanishing Point System you get everyhingt you need that just works together well and is easy to setup and operate. (from the included Blackmagic Design Decklink Video capture Card, Multiple Tracking Sensors, Offset Lense calibration, Digital Genlock, full integration into Unreal Engine and 2 great real-time green screen keyer.

It’s mobile.

As a limited bonus you can get 10% OFF your purchase at Vanishing Point.

(This alone make this course here pay for itself.)

But of course we will also talk about alternative solutions.

The complete setup and operate process.

The goal is that you will be ready from preparing your next shoot until shooting in 5 min.

Video Examples;

Real-time Green screen

Mixed Reality Tracking:

1. Camera movement panning

2. Camera movement back and forth

3. Zoom

4. Focus

You can buy this module for $200 here, but for best value get the bundle further down on this site.

4

Class 4: Recording

There are 2 main options to record in Virtual Production:

1. You output your final composite you create in Unreal Engine through your Capture Card Output with an external video recorder

2. You record your camera footage within your camera + your Unreal Engine Scene within the PC and then bring both together in your editing process.

Both options have pros and cons.

In this module we discuss these things and of course have a detailed look on both ways and how to master possible challenges.

You can buy this module for $200 here, but for best value get the bundle further down on this site.

5

Class 5: Rendering & Post Production

Depending on your Recording Process your post prodcution and editing workflow can be pretty straight forward or a little more comprehensive.

But now matter which route you choose for your next project, we’ll get you covered with this module.

You will also learn some more comprehensive VFX workflows especially if you want to combine real world and virtual world objects and/or characters in your project which can be pretty exiting.

Also color correction and sound-design for Mixed Reality will be an important part of this module. Since both are important parts of a professional Virtual Production result.

For example your actors voice has to match the “sound of your virtual room” where the scene takes place.

Also also the lighting and color of your actor has to match the light in your scene.

This is what separates really professional results from mediocre ones.

But no worries this won’t be too complicated.

You can buy this module for $200 here, but for best value get the bundle further down on this site.

6

Class 6: Ways to make money running your virtual production studio

Maybe you’re already running a film studio

Maybe you work at a educational institution to teach your students.

Maybe you are just fascinated by this incredible technology and want to build your own studio.

Or maybe you have a YouTube channel and want to implement Virtual Production as part of your production process.

In this module I talk about popular and non-popular way on how to make money with your Virtual Production Studio.

Because what’s new with this kind of film production is, that it allows us to monetize our work in new ways.

Did you know that you can upsell your client the creation of a video game for the movie you make for them?

Or that you can work for a studio that is located at the other side of the world?

Or that you can build a production team that is located in different time zone so that work on your project takes place 24hours a day?

This module alone can pay for the whole course a couple of times.

You can buy this module for $200 here, but for best value get the bundle further down on this site.

The course gets updates every month.

Interactive comment section: Leave your comment and I’m happy to help.

Don’t want to follow my path?

Each section has explanations why I’m doing what I’m doing.

My approach was to find the most cost and time efficient way for Indie Virtual Production Studios to create professional results and to ship.

At the end of the day it’s our job to ship a great product for the customer and/or the audience.

To get a great tree, the best solution is not always to model the tree in-house, but to know where to get a good tree.

Please note you will not learn to model your own assets as part of this course, but you will get all the recourses you need, where you can get all the assets (also custom assets) as quickly, cost efficient and high quality as possible.

For Beginners and experienced Filmmakers

No matter what your experience is with Unreal Engine and Virtual Production, we start with the Basics of Unreal Engine and work all the way up to advanced techniques like filming how real and virtual characters interact with each other in real-time.

You learn how to create and build your own scenes or use one of the endless pre-made scenes, probs and assets out there.

Learn to make videos, movies and music videos in a virtual world only. That means making everything only using your computer.

Or make videos, movies and music videos mixed-reality. That means you have your real life talent, actor or even multiple people that you put inside or in front of the virtual world of Unreal Engine.

How much does the course cost?

The course would easily be worth $10,000.

Because this is what it would have saved me.

I wasted so much money on equipment that I ended up not using. I had to do a lot of trial and error and see what works and what not.

I spend so much time trying out things, experimenting,... Don't get me wrong... this can be fun... but also frustrating - especially when you need to shoot something or when something happens in the middle of the shoot and you have actors, artist in front of the camera,...

Unfortunately there was no resource out there that I could use as a reference.

I had to spend all that money and, even worse, I had to spend nearly a year of trial and error to figure everything out.

I'm happy to finally share everything in one comprehensive, but to-the-point class.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I learn how to create virtual characters in this course?

Yes, I will share my process of character creation using Reallusion's Character Creator & Epic Games' Meta Human.

But you need to get the software on your own costs.

What is the difference between Virtual ONLY & Mixed Reality?

"Virtual only" means that you would do all the work needed for the final product with your PC. "Mixed Reality" means that you will film people, props or settings in the real world and combine it with virtual elements from your PC.

What if I have specific questions about equipment I want to use, but you don't use?

The best place to ask this questions is in the comment section below the video that your questions belongs to. I will answer there and everyone can learn from the comment section as well.

When will I able able to shoot my first video?

Of course it depends on things like how much time do you put into this, which equipment you use, if you follow my path or create your own.

But if you put 2-4 hours/day and take the same way I took, you can be able to shoot amazing videos after a week.

But the more you practice the better you'll get.

Does this also work for LED Wall or is it just Greenscreen?

This course is created for Virtual Production using green screen. Many things would apply for Virtual Production using a LED wall as well.

However, keep in mind that if you want to do Virtual Production with LED wall there are many more things to consider.

Is the system you are using for professional use?

Yes, the Vanishing Point System for Virtual Production is a professional system made for Virtual Production.

How long do I have access to the lessons?

This class is a one-time payment with lifetime access class.

Greenscreen or LED Wall?

The advantages of Greenscreen are often over-looked since the LED-Wall is just so much more fancy... :-)

You can interact with your scene.

Place real props on a virtual table, sit on a virtual couch, talk to virtual characters, dance in sync with virtual dancers,…

You can shoot with multiple cameras at the same time.

You can have a real 360 degrees set.

But no question... LED walls also have advantages:

World Lighting on your real world characters and probs

No green spill from the greenscreen

No motion blur green from greenscreen

Easier to use reflecting props like metal. Let’s say you have a drum set with a lot of reflecting parts. It’s really hard to get all that reflecting green out of it If you would use a green screen.

The good use is: You can nearly apply everything you learn in this class also to your LED-Wall project, but notice that there is more work to do using a LED-Wall and that we are using Greenscreen as port of this course.

From Independent Music Artist to Hollywood Studio Owner.

When the pandemic hit and we all had to stay at home, me and my girlfriend (both Indie Artists) weren’t able to shoot our next music videos anymore. So we decided to master the green screen and produce our music videos by ourselves at home. Our first video was horrible. The faces were full of green spill. We used stock pictures and videos as a background. There was no tracking or any kind of movement of the 2D background. So it didn’t looked real Or at least matching together. We created nothing our audiences wanted to see. One week later on the search on how to improve our videos we discovered the Behind The Scenes of the Mandalorian and knew exactly this is what we have to invest in.

The first Music Video we created in our home studio.

About Moon

When I started virtual production I was fixed very quickly and new immediately I have to share what I'm learning here. I felt and still feel the impact it has on my life. And now is the best time to start and get ready for the future of filmmaking.

So happy and proud to do this now!
